Congratulations Sam Leach and Michael Lindeman
Congratulations Archibald, Sulman and Wynne Prize winners Sam Leach and Michael Lindeman.
Artbank was pleased to learn two artists in the collection were awarded three of the most prestigious art awards in Australia in March. Sam Leach won both the Archibald and Wynne Prizes, only the third time this has happened in the history of the awards, and Michael Lindeman won the Sulman Prize.
Artbank first purchased one of Leach’s paintings in 2007 with Albino Lobster, followed by Robot Arm and Puffer Fish in 2008. Leach’s extraordinary works, which update the still life traditions of the Dutch Renaissance, are incredibly detailed and finished with a slick and seductive layer of resin.
Lindeman’s ongoing ‘Paintings, Prints and Wall Hangings’ series was first exhibited in a group show at Sara Meltzer Gallery, Chelsea, New York, USA in 2007. Artbank purchased several works directly from the artist the following year and subsequently exhibited them at the Melbourne Art Fair – the first time they had been exhibited in Australia. The paintings, which are taken from clippings from the Australian classifieds bible, ‘The Trading Post’, exquisitely accentuate the incongruity between the paintings advertised in newspaper classifieds, and art that is presented in a gallery or museum.
Sam Leach and Michael Lindeman’s paintings are currently available to rent.

Clayton Utz
Clayton Utz has enjoyed using Artbank’s rental collection in its Marcus Clarke Street, Canberra premises. The firm covers all facets of law and as such its reception area is the first point of contact for a wide range of clients. Matthew Johnson’s Lumiere, a painting of pearlescent coloured tiles, hangs on a feature wall while James Rogers’s Apollo
sculpture pivots and tilts in the lift lobby. It's an uplifting welcome for clients who are further surprised by the eclectic and unpredictable collection of paintings, photographs and sculptures that await. Partner-in-Charge, John Carroll, says “…leasing the works is a great way for businesses to support contemporary art and emerging Australian artists… the works really enliven our office spaces here at Clayton Utz…we work to create a difference for our staff and clients and can do this effectively with art.” And from the more familiar urban landscapes of Jeffrey Smart to the fanciful beetle paintings of William Yaxley, the minimal painted interiors of Peter Burgess and the wild photographs of Cordeiro and Healy, the space pulses with energy, warmth and conversations about art and place.
