Artbank collection: artists, clients and galleries

It is a great honour for any artist to have their work included in a retrospective or solo exhibition and for art collectors it can contribute to the value and significance of selected works.

Geoff Cassidy, Artbank’s Director, is often approached by public galleries seeking important works by artists to be included in solo and group exhibitions, retrospectives and surveys; and believes it is important to support the artists by promoting their works in these public spaces.

So when the Canberra office of national legal firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques was approached to release one of their favourite Artbank works Large Hole (Pink) by Euan Mcleod for a solo exhibition, they didn’t hesitate.

Large Hole (Pink) occupied a prominent position in the firm’s reception forming part of their impressive collection of Artbank works and was a clear favourite with staff.
The painting has been selected for a touring exhibition of Macleod’s work curated by Gavin Wilson for the Tweed River Art Gallery, entitled Surface Tension: Euan Macleod. The exhibition launches at S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney on the 12 November 2010 and tours until December 2011.

“We’re fortunate to work with clients like Mallesons who understand the value of a retrospective to an artist’s career”, Mr Cassidy said.

“To fill the gap in Malleson’s Artbank collection, we recommended a number of alternative works. Mallesons decided to take three: Morgan Allender’s Vigil to replace the Macleod that hung in reception, plus Elizabeth Gower’s Scatter and Adam Lester’s I Love You This Much to enhance other spaces.”

Helen Weldon, Mallesons Stephen Jaques Business Development Manager in Canberra commented that the replacement artworks have been very well received and there’s been lively discussion and a good exchange of views from both staff and clients. The Elizabeth Gower, an explosively colourful painting, acts as a background in the video conferencing room and is now on show to interstate and overseas staff and clients.
